Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease, GERD Symptoms, Acid Reflux, Denver, Esophagus, Stomach, Heartburn, Acid Indigestion, Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease Colorado, Digestive Disorder,  | rockymountaingastro.com (also known as GERD) is a digestive disorder that affects the ring of muscle between the esophagus and the stomach. The esophagus is the muscular tube that connects your throat to your stomach. GERD occurs when the muscular ring at the bottom of the esophagus does not properly close. As a result, the contents of the stomach leak back out into the esophagus and cause irritation. This irritation is commonly known as reflux and is experienced in the form of heartburn or acid indigestion.

GERD can occur in people of all ages, including infants, and may be diagnosed if symptoms occur more than two times per week. Treatment for GERD varies, but may include medicine or surgery depending on the case. There are other ways to minimize GERD symptoms such as avoiding foods high in acid, eating smaller meals or meals much earlier before going to bed.
