An endoscopy followed by a small bowel biopsy is performed to diagnose any disease in the intestinal mucosa, or the lining of the small intestine. During an endoscopy of the small intestine, the physician will remove a sample of tissue from the lining to later test under a microscope. Specifically, this procedure is used to test for tumors or malabsorption issues in the small intestine.
